It is only when we see that we are all intricately connected that we might begin to envision, dream, transform and transform the world...into one where we are ALL valued, respected, and can thrive, without causing harm to others, or to the world which is necessary for our survival.
"Nature LOVES Variety & Societies HATE Variety"
Milton Diamond
This doesn't have to be the case.
We can CHOOSE variety and inclusion- any belief that is bad is simply...bullshit
Although it is shifting, it is like a sloth and at a glacial pace, which is unacceptable. Changing this begins with you and how YOU think. Do you blame others for their struggle? Or do you understand that struggle comes out of experience? Do you blame people for the way their mental health difficulties present? Or are you aware that they are people who have experienced something you cannot comprehend and that the experience(s) are the source of the behavior? Why do we blame people for not taking horrible experiences with a smile and without effect? Help people understand that there are no "good" or "bad" people... only PEOPLE who have likely suffered more than you can imagine. It requires a shift in our general perception; requires us to expand our understanding and compassion. We can choose to see the impact of pain and suffering, or dismiss it with a view that is slowly going extinct - that people just need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps - thus putting the error on the victim. This does nothing to help the individual and the indifference only hurts us as a whole. You can help our collective shift to a more humane world in a few ways:
Catch yourself when you step into judging someone else (their behavior, situation or struggle). Notice and then choose to see that the person is suffering and in some form of pain. Help them if you can - recognize when you can't and simply be kind... a smile costs NOTHING and can make a HUGE difference. People who are suffereing MOST are generally unseen or ignored.
Help others be more understanding: When you are with someone and they express judgement for those who are struggling - help them by helping them see a person in pain instead of the specific behavior being judged.
Support policies which make mental health a priority and help increase access. MANY people do not have the ability to afford therapy, programs desiged to make it more accessible fail to help or reach MANY- M A N Y people. Thus, we must make it more accessible for ALL people.
If you are fortunate enough to have a comfortable life - donate to help others have access to mental health.
If you have a therapist you think is really good - give $ to them to make sessions free for any client of theirs who struggles to afford sessions
Donate to local organizations helping to provide basic needs to those who do not have them - especially the unhoused or those on the cusp.
Give to organizations making housing/shelter more affordable and accessible for those who can't typically access it **Educate yourself on the many ways that this is impossible for those who have fallen through the cracks**
Volunteer - Give your time to help others:
shelters for the unhoused
food banks
find likeminded others to take meals to the unhoused
addiction centers
Trauma and Suffering Permeate Our World -
This does NOT have to be our reality!
The extent of normalized human suffering is a result of many things; many threads of our various systems of structuring our world weave intense pain into the world. It does not have to be this way. It is a choice, based on our collective values and priorities; and at its deepest root it is based on whether we view the world and others through the lens of caring about others and collective human well-being, or that of individual gain, prosperity and happiness.
Our current status quo and mode of operating is out of the later state of values. There has been no time that we were 'GREAT' for the MAJORITY of people. Recent years have been exceptional in their intensity and sense of division. It has been like watching us collectively go through a mental break, an identity crisis and a crisis of values. If the world continues as it is or continues to retreat to a set of priorities, which harm and discriminate against MANY, the end result will be only greater suffering.
We all choose to either participate in and contribute to that set of values, or we can choose differently. We absolutely CAN create a world built on the value of well-being for all - including the planet with which our survival is intricately tied.
The first step in this is understanding that for the vast majority of people struggling, it is in response to the events of a dysfunctional world. Our world as it is, continues to place blame or fault on the person for having a normal reaction to a defective world which created the suffering. This backwards approach only serves to further traumatize, thus compounding the pain. Further this approach serves mostly to keep things as they are, so that those who benefit so greatly from the way it has been... who ultimately benefit from the suffering.

Compassionate Repsonse vs. Punative Response
No one can help themselves, or heal in any way, unless their basic needs and sense of safety are met. If you have never experienced a lack of safety, you CANNOT know how profound its impact is on the mind and the body.

The Law of Kindness
The Law of Kindness is the most basic law of humanity. It transcends all religions, races, genders, sexualities, abilities... it is rooted in the value and worth of all living beings. I found the Law of Kindness in Tolstoy's character Levin, in "Anna Karenina." His recognition that the society he was living in undervalued the peasant class. He struggled with the class structure of his world and his own religious beliefs because of how interconnected religion is with class struggle. His view was that there was a Law of Kindness which was greater than all other laws and which, unlike most laws of men and church, did not place a greater value or idea of spiritual worthiness on a person based on their class.
In my own exploration of the source of suffering in our world, I found that this Law of Kindness is what we need to embrace most today. We have lost our sense of accountability and responsibility to one another because we live in a world which uplifts profit and personal gain over the well-being of others. For us to ever live in a different world without so much systemic suffering, we need to collectively choose that this law is more important than all others and must be the essence of all other laws we create or structure our society around. Our social compact must be reassessed. Our current system is working perfectly, but only for a very few, while creating so much suffering for so many. Our success must be measured by the well being of our most vulnerable, and by reducing the very vulnerability our system creates. To achieve this we are faced with a collective decision; to courageously face the work of creating a new system, or to continue down the path we are on and to a future of even greater suffering and ultimately our own destruction. Our system as it is, is not conducive to human or planetary well-being. We CAN choose to create something different, but it begins with each of us.
Ask yourself:
Do I reflect kindness in my thoughts, words and actions?
If not, where/how can I increase this in my life?
Does my church or religious group reflect kindness? Do they promote hate in any way or exclusiveness? Do they otherise and create separation? Do they reflect and promote unity and connection with ALL?
Do the political leaders you support walk in kindness? Do they demonstrate this in their beliefs, behaviors, statements and actions?
Do you teach kindness to your children? Do you model kindness?
Do you talk with your children about kindness when discussing people who are different from you or your family culture?
Do you teach your children HOW to be kind, what it looks like, what to do when it is hard?
Do you take time to reflect on how you impact others? Do you see how many small actions, beliefs, words all play into the many systems which create suffering? Do you see the ways your actions, beliefs, words either contribute to suffering, or help to eliviate it?
Are you willing to see areas you might need to INCREASE kindness in your life? Our culture does not teach or instill accountability or a willingness to self reflect, so this may not be something you are used to or really familiar with. If you wish to work on this, reach out to a therapist to help guide you through gently stepping into self evaluation. You CAN learn to be a person who lives and moves through life with kindness.
This video explains what the Law of Kindness is and why it matters.
Do you live by the Law of Kindness? Does your belief in and practice of kindness include those who are different from you? Do you see that your own beliefs, actions and words all contribute either to a world of more kindness or a world of greater suffering? Are you willing to take a critical look at whether or not you truly live by this law; whether your words, beliefs and actions are in line with the Law of Kindness?

More books that offer insight into, and contribute to, reducing suffering in the world
"Determined" by Robert Sapolsky
This book will help you understand and gain compassion and reduce judgement for yourself and others.
He is brilliant! His work and ideas highlight the cruelty in how we (collectively) treat people - judging them, ostracizing them, punishing them, harming them, preying upon them, and ultimately condemning them FOR THINGS THEY HAD NO CONTROL OVER! Our society is firmly rooted in blaming people, who are victims to their circumstance, for their struggle, As though they could "simply" change their circumstance.
A People's History of the World
This book will help you understand the story of all of us - from the voice of the people rather than the voice of power and dominance.
In this book I found the answer to a question I desperately wanted an answer to - what is the source of hierarchy and class? I have always felt things were off in the world, but after losing Lily, my awarenes of suffering became acute. I tried to tease out the source of all of the suffering. I landed on when we first established the concept of heirarchy and class.
This will help you understand the profound impact Myths have on our society and our lived/shared experience. Further, his assertion of this being a time of the creation of new myths because the old ones are falling away. I wholeheartedly agree... we need NEW myths to guide us through life's difficulties AND the reason and sense to know that they are STORIES - NOT FACTS!!
This brilliant mind will help you understand and think about oppression, the systems of oppression, as well as the path to eliminating it, in a way that expands your humanity.
For the world to cease having the oppressed, and the oppressor, we must begin to envision what that world looks like.
by Howard Zinn
Read this if you want to understand history through a lens that isn't from the conquerer, or the oppressor, rather, one that is from the PEOPLE
Read this book. It's dense!
But this is how we create a world that is truly FREE
It IS possible!
