Course Description
Course Description: This specialized course offers an intensive exploration of the Vagus Nerve (VN) and its profound influence on emotional regulation, physiological states, and lived experience. Utilizing principles of Polyvagal Theory, students will gain a deep understanding of the Autonomic Nervous System and its role in managing states like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and stress. The course details how the four styles of NeuroMeditation (NM)—Focus, Mindfulness, Open Heart, and Quiet Mind— each uniquely impact the Vagus Nerve to shift and regulate the nervous system. Students will gain the practical skills to accurately identify their current nervous system state (e.g., fight/flight activation, collapsed/freeze, or safe/calm) and then utilize the specific NM style needed to interrupt the stress response, restore balance, and return to the parasympathetic rest/digest state. The curriculum emphasizes experiential learning, connecting students with the optimal sensory routes and imagery for personalized vagal nerve and nervous system engagement.
Key Learning Outcomes:
Explain the anatomy and function of the Vagus Nerve and its critical role in the broader Polyvagal System and emotional well-being.
Identify and articulate the three main states of the Autonomic Nervous System (sympathetic activation, dorsal vagal collapse, ventral vagal calm) in both self and others.
Apply specific NeuroMeditation techniques and other Neuro-Tools to interrupt amygdala signaling during activation and then return the system to calm/safety or to stimulate the system when in a collapsed (hypo-aroused) state.
Integrate the use of the four NM styles to effectively manage, regulate, and restore the nervous system to a balanced, calm, and safe state.
